In 2023, Google highlighted that artificial intelligence (AI) technology represents the future of search.
Now, it appears the company has commenced its implementation.
During the annual developer conference, Google unveiled a new feature named AI Overviews for its search engine.
Initially, this feature is rolling out in the United States but will soon be accessible to users worldwide.
According to Google, when users search for a topic using this feature, an AI-generated summary will appear at the top of the search results.
This marks the initial steps toward integrating AI technology into search engine functionality.
Liz Reed, the head of Google Search, stated that through generative AI, Google aims to assist users beyond traditional search queries.
She further explained that AI Overviews will provide detailed summaries along with relevant web links pertaining to the searched topics.

To achieve this, a specialized Gemini model tailored for desktop users will be employed to respond to inquiries, while also delivering search outcomes.
Liz Reid clarified that AI technology won't be employed for every search query. For instance, searching for a straightforward web link like Google.com wouldn't benefit from AI intervention.
Gemini will prove most valuable for intricate searches—those necessitating repeated queries or those less commonly searched for on Google.
Liz Reed elaborated that striking a balance is a challenge, noting that AI over visual tools won't be effective for specific subjects. However, preliminary data indicates that this new search approach is prompting users to explore more web links.
